Division I Sectional Semifinals
October 15, 2005 at Wayne HS at 2pm
Sidney beat Springfield North 17-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-12
Down two games to zero to Springfield North, the Sidney Yellow Jacket Volleyball Team refused to lose and earned a hard fought second chance at the Piqua Indians at the Division I Tournament. Sidney managed to jump out to early leads in both of the first two games only to see momentum shift to the Panthers while the Jackets stalled. North took game one 25-17 and held off a late Sidney rally in game two to win 25-22. Both teams trade points throughout the early going in the third match with no team taking a lead of more than 2 points until Sidney pulled away late to win 25-21 on the strength of 4 kills, all by a different player and a big block by Natasha Yeager. Game four was almost a replay of game three until North broke a 13-13 tie and started to pull away. Two kills by Megan Moore kept the Jackets close but North was in control at 21-18. The game and match took a dramatic turn as the Jackets got a side out and Megan Moore served an ace followed by six more strong serves. A Courtney Richardson kill gave the Jackets the final point and a second straight 25-21 victory. Strong serving by Molly Johnson and Shannon O’Leary, supported by five blocks by Richardson helped the Jackets to a 6-2 lead in game five. Megan Moore added 2 blocks and 2 kills to keep the pressure on North. Down 14-9, North dug deep and rallied but saw their tournament dreams end on Alyssa Burton’s fourth kill of the game and the Jackets claimed the game and match with a 15-12 win. The Jacket Defense was outstanding with Abby Zimmerman leading the way with 27 digs. Shannon O’Leary, Avery Schroer, and Narumi Sato added 19, 16, and 14 respectively. Molly Johnson had 52 assists as the Jacket hitters came up big. She also had 2 kills and 4 blocks. Megan Moore led the charge with 22 kills while adding 4 blocks, 10 digs, and 2 aces and Alyssa Burton added 14. Courtney Richardson totaled 6 kills and 10 solo blocks while Natasha Yeager had 7 kills to go with 6 blocks.
