District Alternatives - Placing 5th - 103 Kyle Roesser, 125 Mason Calvert, 171 Steven Jones, 285 Trevor Hawkey. The team broke the school record for the Most Wins in a Season. The Record now stands at 318 wins. The squad also has tied the Most 20 Match Winners in a Season @ 8. Trail the Pin record by just 4, squad has 173 pins on the year.

February 7, 2010 - GWOC
Springboro 319, Centerville 279.5, Miamisburg 243.5, Butler 237, Sidney 211, Fairmont
208.5, Piqua 162, Beavercreek 160.5, Fairborn 160, Northmont 149.5, Lebanon 149, Wayne 142, Troy 117.5, Xenia 115, Trotwood 41.0.

January 20, 2010
Sidney 44 Piqua 25
Sidney built an early lead with the help of forfeits and never looked back. The Jackets actually only won 3 bouts that were wrestled along with 5 forfeits given by Piqua.

Sidney 37 Xenia 39
Xenia just out wrestled us tonight. We had beaten them earlier in the year 48-25, but tonight was a different story. The first time we met, they had a couple of their starters out that made a huge difference. They also turned the tables on us in a couple of individual matches. We had our chances, there were 6 or 7 lead changes in team scoring. It all comes down to the little things that add up to be big things when a dual is this close. We had a couple of their guys on their back but couldn't get the pin, we gave up 4 pins, along with the extra bonus points for major and superior wins. I thought Xenia wanted this one more than us tonight. The Jackets are now 10-3 in duals this season.

January 9, 2010 - Beavercreek Tournament
Sidney 6th
Cody Davis was champion at 112 lbs. winning 5-1 in the fianls over district qualifier Kramer of Beavercreek. It was good to see Davis back in action after a couple weeks out with an injury. Cody is now 15-2 on the year. Darian Ginter was runner-up at 145 lbs., losing 11-5 to Fraley of Miami Trace. Ginter looked especially good on his feet and in the bottom position. Darian is high point leader presently with a 16-5 record. Trevor Hawkey also placed 2nd at 285 lbs. Hawkey was somewhat a surprise for the Jackets, although he has put together a nice year thus far going 13-7 with 11 pins.
Steven Jones added a 3rd place finish, going 3-1 in the tournament. 5th place finishers included: Mason Calvert at 125 lbs. and Nate Karnehm at 135 lbs. In the reserve tournament portion, placers included: 2nd Coty Niswonger, Christian Manor 3rd Zach Bemus, Jacob Kerrigan 4th Dalton Scoggin.

December 29/30, 2009 - GMVWA Holiday Tournament
Sidney 29th out of a field of 48 teams
Ethan Headings placed 4th at 160 lbs. going 5-2 overall. Ethan was named Quiznos "Wrestler of the Meet". Gavin Spangler was one match away from placing at 140 lbs. going 4-2 with (4) pins. Darian Ginter and Kyle Roesser also competed on the second day of competition. Click here for complete GMVWA Tournament results at baumspage.com.

December 17, 2009
Sidney 48 Xenia 25
Sidney 45 Wayne 22

The wrestling team rose their overall dual record to 8-1 (4-0 in GWOC action) with a 48-25 victory of Xenia and a win over Wayne 45-22. Neither match was considered our best performance of the year as a team, but the bottom line is we won. Sidney probably lost 6 bouts we were in position to win but ended up losing on the night. Our kids know in dual meets we got to win those close ones, it just didn't always happen tonight. Especially in the Wayne match we didn't keep to our style of wrestling. Wayne was emotionally up after a big win over Fairborn, which they carried over to our match. Wayne has some very good athletes that we got into some bad situations by trying to match their strength. Quiznos "Wrestler of the Meet" was Darian Ginter. Ginter has matured into a very good wrestler pinning both of his opponents. Darian leads the team in falls this season with (10).

December 12, 2009 - Xenia Tournament
The Wrestling Team defended their team title Saturday at the Xenia Tournament. Runner-up team was a good squad from Mechanicsburg. The difference in the tournament was Sidney's ability to pin, we gathered 34 falls in the tournament. 12 Sidney wrestlers in all placed in the top 3 of their weight class, that great team balance was a huge lift also for the Jackets. Sidney Wrestlers Placing: 103 - Kyle Rosser (4-0, 4 pins, 1st Place), 112 - Cody Davis (4-1, 4 pins, 2nd Place), 119 - Elisha Price (3-1, 1 pin, 3rd Place), 125 - Mason Calvert (4-1, 2 pins, 2nd Place), 130 - Derek Spangler (3-2, 2 pins, 3rd Place), Alex Blosser (1-3, 1 pin, 5th Place), 135 - Nate Karnchm (4-0, 4 pins, 1st Place), 140 - Gavin Spangler (5-0, 4 pins, 1st Place), 145 - Darian Ginter (3-1, 3 pins, 2nd Place), 152 - Zach Dyer (2-1, 2 pins, 3rd Place), 160 - Steven Jones (3-1, 1 pin, 3rd Place), 189 - Jacob Kerrigan (2-3, 6th Place), 215 - Devin Yost (3-1, 2 pins, 2nd Place), 285 - Trevor Hawkey (4-1, 4 pins, 3rd Place). Sidney's pin total for year now is 72, the team has their sights set on breaking the team total of 177 pins set in 2001.

December 10, 2009
Sidney 57 Tippecanoe 13
Sidney 34 Butler 19
The wrestlers traveled to Tipp City for a Super-tri match. In the first round Sidney beat Tipp City 57-13. It was a solid effort over a young Tipp Squad. The Jackets were able to gain 5 pins total, with Sidney winning the first seven bouts in this dual. In the Van. Butler match Sidney won 37-19. The night was filled with exciting close match-ups that could have very easily gone either way. The Jackets won these close matches throughout the evening, including (2) overtime wins by Mason Clavert and Darian Ginter. Both of these young men were named Quiznos "Wrestler of the Meet". This win marked the first time in 6 years that Sidney has defeated Butler. A great team effort in an action packed evening of high school wrestling.

December 5, 2009 - Sidney Duals
The Sidney wrestling team had an outstanding showing at the Sidney Duals going 4-1 for a 2nd place finish. Match results: Sidney 60 Miami East 15. Sidney picked up 5 pins along with 3 forfeits to put the match out of reach for the Vikings. It was a solid performance for the Jackets who lost only 3 matches in the dual. Sidney 81 Meadowdale 0. The Meadowdale Lions with limited wrestlers competing were outclassed by Sidney. The Jackets recorded their 4th shut-out in school history. Sidney 72 National Trail 3. Sidney came close to recording back to back shut outs losing only one bout by a close 3-2 score. Sidney 61 Troy 14. Sidney came out smoking in this one also, losing only 3 bouts in this one. The big victory was the first in the last 5 yrs. for the Jackets against the Trojans. Troy is a GWOC and possible Sectional opponent, so today's match was important for future seeding purposes. Championship Match: Lima Bath 44 Sidney 33. This was an excellent test for the Jackets, as Lima Bath has an experienced squad back. In 2009 Bath captured the Sidney Duals, League, and Sectional titles. The Wildcats have potentially 4 state qualifiers in their line-up this season. Even though Sidney picked up 5 pins and Bath 6 falls. The dual was a see-saw afair that had several individual bouts that went back and forth that could have been won by either competitor. One of the team goals this season was to bring back the exciting dual match atmosphere, the Jackets did that and more in this "Fan Delight" match. Sidney had a 56-15 record today, picking up 31 total pins.

February 21, 2009 - SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT
Beavercreek 236, Springboro 184 1/2, Sidney 163 1/2, Lebanon 131, West Carrollton 118, Wayne 109 1/2, Stebbins 103 1/2, Fairborn 88, Meadowdale 53, Belmont 45, Trotwood 44. Sidney had an outstanding weekend as they placed 3rd as a team. Both Zach Dyer (152) and Ethan Headings (160) were district alternates placing 5th in their weight class. Alex Blosser (119), Cody Wagner (130), Trevor Hawkey (285) all placed 3rd at their weight class. Thomas Minniear became the first Yellow Jacket since 2004 to capture a Sectional Title for Sidney. (7) District Qualifiers and a total of 12 placers in the top 6 of each weight class, that's a good weekend by anyone's standards. Click here for complete results at baumspage.com.

February 12, 2009
Sidney 42 Greenview 34
This dual was a real "Barn Burner"! Greenview (Division #3) has several excellent individuals that could go along way in the post-season. Put that with a vocal crowd and it gave an atmosphere of what true high school wrestling should be, excitement in almost every bout. Sidney gained the upper hand early in the upper-weights leading 18-0 after 3 bouts. Greenview closed the gap to 24-19 with only 6 weights to go. Greenview had to forfeit three times that made it very difficult for them, with a full squad the outcome could have easily been different.

Sidney 45 West Carrollton 27
This dual also provided alot of excitment for the fans in attendance. West Carrollton was leading 27-26 after an overtime victory at 145 lbs. Sidney managed to win the last four matches of the evening to seal the victory.
Quiznos "Wrestler of the Week" senior co-captain Thomas Minniear. Final dual meet record for Sidney stands at 10-5.

February 11, 2009
Sidney 20 Tecumseh 55
This dual got away from us very quickly to the much more aggressive Tecumseh Arrows. The Jackets dropped the first five bouts to trail 25-0 and never closed the gap afterwards winning only 4 matches. Give the Arrows credit they came out strong, dominating the matches.

Sidney 58 Indian Lake 22
The Sidney team came out like they "wanted this one". The Jackets went 10-4 overall in this one picking up 5 pins along the way.

February 7, 2009 - GWOC Wrestling Tournament
Miamisburg 177, Centerville 171 1/2, Beavercreek 149 1/2, Butler 149, Fairmont 129 1/2, Northmont 125, Piqua 121, Springboro 93 1/2, Troy 88, Wayne 71, Sidney 68, Lebanon 62, Fairborn 32, Xenia 31, Springfield 20, Trotwood 18. Sidney Placers: 103 lbs - Cody Davis 2nd place. Davis reached the finals by pinning top seed and state ranked Matt Terry of Van. Butler. Terry had beaten Cody 3 times earlier this season. Davis lost to Windsor of Wayne 17-2 in the finals. Cody Davis was named Quiznos "Wrestler of the Week". 171 lbs. - Kyle Saunders 4th place. Kyle was unseeded entering the tournament but won 3 key bouts in a row on Saturday pinning the 3rd and 4th seeded wrestlers in his weight class. Saunders is now 19-13 on the year, he was also named Quiznos "Wrestler of the Week". 135 lbs. - John Braun 5th place. In a very competitive weight class John looked strong in every bout going 3-2 on the weekend. John followed pre-mapped game plans well in several of his bouts. 160 lbs. - Ethan Headings 5th place. Headings was physical in all of his bouts again at the GWOC. Ethan used his intelligence to win a couple of key bouts throughout the weekend. 112 lbs. - Elisha Price 6th place. Elisha wrestled well but suffered a shoulder injury and was forced to default his last two bouts. Hopefully he will return to action for the sectionals. 140 lbs. - Thomas Minniear 6th place. Minniear wrestled well in a very competitive weight class. Thomas has picked up his intensity as the post-season draws near. Overall the team wrestled well as we were short handed 3 weight classes due to injuries. The coaching staff was impressed with the wrestlers desire and efforts throughout this tough weekend contest.

Reserve GWOC Tournament Results Sidney Placers: 1st - Gavin Spangler (145 lbs.). 3rd - Steven Jones (160 lbs.) 19-5 reserve record on the year, Dustin Opsomer (189 lbs.). 4th - Coty Niswonger (119 lbs.), Cody Wagner (135 lbs.), Jacob Kerrigan (215 lbs.). Overall the Jackets wrestled well throughout the entire day, in this excellent quality tournament. Both Gavin Spangler and Dustin Opsomer were recently released to return to action since injuries they suffered in December. Our younger kids ended the year on a good note as all wrestled well. The team's attention is now directed at the post-season. The Sectionals will be held at Centerville on Saturday February 21, the top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the district meet held at Hilliard Darby the following weekend.

January 24, 2009 - Dublin Scioto Pool Tournament
Team Scores: Northmont 222, Springfield Holland 214 1/2, Dublin Scioto 187 1/2, Hamilton Township 172 1/2, Sidney & Marion Franklin 160, VanWert 142 1/2, Marietta 138, Westerville South 134, Independence 53. The Team wrestled well throughout most of the tournament, especially in the finals when they won 9 of 13 bouts. The squad gathered 18 additional pins, closing on the school record. Another possible school record is the most 20 match winners in a season, the school record now stands at (8). As many as 9 Sidney wrestlers could reach that level this season. Quiznos "Wrestler of the Week" Cody Davis at 103 lbs. placed 2nd pinning 3 opponents in the tournament. Sidney Placers: Cody Davis (103) 2nd, Ethan Headings (160) 2nd, John Braun (135) 3rd, Darian Ginter (152) 3rd, Cody Wagner (130) 5th, Thomas Minniear (140) 5th, Kyle Saunders (171) 5th, Devin Yost (215) 5th, Alex Blosser (119) 6th, Riley Rosengarten (125) 6th, Zach Dyer (145) 6th, Aric Eppley (189) 6th, Elisha Price (112) 8th, Trevor Hawkey (285) 8th.

January 22, 2009
Sidney 70 Dayton Belmont 9
Sidney was too much for the improving Bisons who forfeited a total of 4 weight classes. Belmont had several wrestlers with excellent quickness and strength. Sidney had to resort to all technique in many occasions to beat their opponents. First period pins were gathered by Elisha Price (20 sec.), Riley Rosengarten (1:43) first varsity victory, John Braun (1:49), Trevor Hawkey (50 sec.). More highly contested bouts that resulted with a late 3rd period pin included Ethan Langhorst (145 lbs.), Kyle Saunders (171 lbs.), Trevor Hawkey (285 lbs.). It was good to see the Jackets continue their pinning ways as they move closer to the team record of 171 pins set by the 2001 squad.. Team total now stands at 111 varsity pins, 60 shy of that school record.

Sidney 60 Meadowdale 24
Meadowdale was added to the schedule late this year after the Dayton City Schools passed a much needed levy. Meadowdale had many returning starters back giving their coaching staff hopes of jumping up high in the team rankings this season. Tonight Sidney had too much depth throughout the line-up for the Lions. 6 bouts resulted in forfeits, 2 first period pins by Alex Blosser (1:10) and Kyle Saunders (29 sec.). Captains John Braun and Thomas Minniear both also picked up pins in their bouts. Meadowdale's team strength is in their upper weights as they pinned Sidney 4 times, although in a couple of those matches Sidney was actually leading early. Team dual record now stands at 7-4 for Sidney.

Tonight was "Senior Night" as John Braun, Thomas Minniear, Kyle Saunders, Dustin Opsomer, and stat Kelli Neubauer were all honored. Their accomplishments both on and off the mat were listed while in high school. Good luck to these seniors as they finish their senior year out in wrestling.

Tonight was also declared a "Black Out", any student wearing black was admitted free to the match. The Wrestlers and coaching staff wish to thank all those in attendance who helped to cheer the Jackets on to victory, especailly the girls in the top of the gym bleachers who painted themselves up and got rowdy.

January 17, 2009 - Wapakoneta Tournament
Sidney 7th out of 12
The Wrestling Team finally returned to action after a 3 week layoff at the Wapakoneta Tournament. The competition was very good at this one day pool style tournament that had several Division #1 teams from the Columbus area. The Jackets placed 7th in the 12 team affair. Sidney looked good throughout the action in the pool play winning several close exciting matches. Sidney only lost 1 or 2 matches in all 5 rounds that we probably could have won. Once the Jackets reached the finals things seemed to snowball against them as they went 0-8 in those final round matches. Several of those bouts we were in position to win only to find ways to lose them. Mat time and conditioning seemed to be a real factor as we hit the wall running out of gas in many situations.
Sidney placers: 4th Cody Davis (103 lbs.), Cody Wagner (130 lbs.), Zach Dyer (145 lbs.), Aric Eppley (189 lbs.), 6th Elisha Price (112 lbs.), Derek Spangler (125 lbs.), Darian Ginter (152 lbs.), Ethan Headings (160 lbs.). Quiznos "Wrestler of the Week" was Junior Aric Eppley who went 3-2 with 2 pins on the day. Ethan Langhorst and Devin Yost both saw their first varsity action of the season, they rose to the occasion winning their final two matches by pin.

December 28, 2008 - GMVWA Tournament
Sidney 33rd at 47
GMVWA Holiday Tournament is the toughest tournament every year in the Dayton area, 44 teams competed with Sidney placing 33rd overall scoring 47 points. Three different Sidney Wrestlers were defeated in the consolation round to place, that being Cody Davis at 103 lbs, John Braun at 135 lbs, and Ethan Headings at 160 lbs. What made this a tough outing for the Jackets was the fact that no Sidney Wrestlers were seeded going into the tournament. Thus unless a Wrestler upset a seeded opponent he would not place. A big plus for the squad was the ability to pick up the pin, gathering a total of 11 which gave Sidney 22 additional points, that's a lot in a tournament such as this where the team scores are so close. Freshman Cody Davis was named Quiznos "Wrestler of the Week" for his efforts going 2-2 with 2 pins.

December 18, 2008
Sidney 47 Wayne 27
The Jackets controlled the action throughout most of the dual meet being more aggressive than the younger Warrior squad. Wayne also forfeited a couple of weight classes that also led to the 20 point victory margin. A negative aspect to the meet was that two different Sidney wrestlers lost to Wayne opponents that they had beaten just the weekend prior at the Xenia Tournament.

Sidney 35 Fairborn 27
This was a real barn burner meet that really wasn't decided until as late as the 12th bout into the meet. Many of the individual match-ups were action packed with several going back and forth throughout the bout. Sidney built a lead in the early going winning several of the middle weight classes only to have the Skyhawks draw near in the upper weights which was the strength of their team. Alex Blosser won with a pin that wrapped up the victory for Sidney. Darian Ginter was a double winner in the tri-meet and was named Quiznos "Wrestler of the Week". Both Wayne and Fairborn beat the Jackets a year ago, so it was nice to win both of these duals. Team record is now 5-4 in dual meets going into the holidays.

Quiznos :Wrestler of the Week" Freshman Derek Spangler won the Xenia Tournament going 7-0 for the week, raising his overall record to 10-2.

December 13, 2008 - Xenia Invitational
Sidney 1st at 334
Sidney won their first team championship in two years as they rolled up 334 pts. The team effort was outstanding with 34 total pins being the key to the title. Sidney had a good balanced attack with the following wrestlers placing: 1st - Derek Spangler (125 lbs.) 2nd - Elisha Price (112 lbs.), Thomas Minniear (140 lbs.), Gavin Spangler (145 lbs.) 3rd - Cody Davis (103 lbs.), Darian Ginter (152 lbs.), Kyle Saunders (171 lbs.), 4th - Ethan Headings (160 lbs.), Dustin Opsomer (189 lbs.), 5th Zach Dyer (152 lbs). The tournament was a costly one as the Jackets lost the services of junior Gavin Spangler for several weeks with a broken elbow. Click here for complete Xenia Invitational results at baumspage.com.

December 11, 2008 - Sidney Super-Tri
Sidney 65 Tipp City 11
The Jackets took it to Tipp right from the start to build an early big lead winning a couple of close bouts that could have gone either way. The big difference in the dual was Sidney was more aggressive and picked up several pins. A solid win over a lesser experienced squad.

Sidney 30 Vandalia Butler 44
The best effort of the year for Sidney. Up and down the line-up the Jacket wrestlers gave super effort in front of a vocal crowd that got into this dual match. Butler returned 8 district qualifiers and Sidney had none so the experience was on the Aviators' side. Ethan Headings pinned Adams a district qualifier for a key win. The Jackets came together as a "team" tonight. This effort could be the start of a new beginning for the Sidney Wrestling team. Team dual record now stands at 3-4.

Quiznos "Wrestler of the Week" Senior captain John Braun @ 135 lbs. 5-0 record

December 6, 2008 - Sidney Dual Tournament
Round 1: Sidney 44 Stebbins 22
Good solid effort by the Jackets. Probably the best overall effort of the entire day. The match ups actually worked in our advantage most of the dual. I was especially impressed with Derek Spangler, Zach Dyer, and Aric Eppley. All three came out strong and really took it to their opponents. Captain Thomas Minniear won a nice close win against a quality opponent, those close wins are a key to winning duals as a team.

Round 2: Sidney 38 Piqua 40
We just gave up way too many pins (5). In a couple of those matches we were actually winning, that's a real killer. A match like that is a 9 pt. swing. We did have a few wins that were huge in that dual. Gavin Spangler's pin against Mayberry (district qualifier) was big. Dustin Opsomer stole a huge win from Colin Nickolai. Dustin just wore his opponent down physically. Nickolai is recovering from a broken leg in the 6th game of the football season. The last couple of years Nickolai has been in the match to qualify for the state. Aric Eppley is much improved from a year ago, his confidence level and body awareness is improved greatly since last year.

Round 3: Sidney 64 National Trail 12
Just way too many forfeits (5) from National Trail to make it much of a match. We had (5) pins in less than a minute each. Our kids were aggressive but it also was a case of wrestling kids with less experience.

Round 4: Sidney 33 Troy 46
We had 5 big pins, especially Derek Spangler's against Cochran who had a good post-season winning a couple of matches at the district level last year. Ethan Headings also had a huge pin when he was kinda on the ropes in the 3rd period, at that point we were leading 27-22. Then the wall came crashing down, four straight Sidney wrestlers got pinned for a total of 5pins against us. We just can't give up that many pins with a good team like Troy. Freshmen Cody Davis and Elisha Price both looked like hammers. Both are extremely quick and aggressive and never give up.

Round 5: Sidney 21 Lima Bath 21
This dual got out of hand quickly. Bath is very tough in the light middle weights with 2 returning state qualifiers, a junior high state champion and another kid who could qualify to the state. We got blown out of the water early on and it really affected some of our upper weights that were coming off tough losses to Troy the round earlier. Another 5 pins we gave up!

We have to make this a pride thing again at Sidney - not to give up the pin in dual matches. General comments on the day. We looked very good at times in several duals. We just couldn't get enough of the 13 weights today looking good in the same dual. Consistency was a huge problem throughout. One of our kids would wrestle a huge match and be flat the next round. Four or five Jacket Wrestlers had that problem. I was very pleased with our younger kids. They showed emotions and went after people. They are a big asset to us. I thought we were in pretty good condition, up until today. We have a long road ahead of us, but I'm very excited about the season and look forward to much improvement from last year. The overall quality of the tournament was much better this year. We placed 3rd along with Piqua and Stebbins today with a record of 2-3.

Hilliard Freshmen Tournament Results: 2nd Place @ 125 lbs. Riley Rosengarten went 4-1 with 4 pins to reach the finals. 3rd Place @ 152 lbs. Alex Climer Climer had 3 pins. Coty Niswonger and Tyler Olson also picked up wins for Sidney.

When Phil Rosengarten approached Sidney High School wrestling coach Jim McCracken three years ago, the veteran coach was hesitant.

Rosengarten has cerebal palsy and uses a wheelchair to get around. The disease, McCracken thought, would have an impact because of his limited flexibility. Click here to read complete story now.

In the consolations Ernst defeated Powell of Faifield 3-0 in a bout that Ernst controlled all the action. Boudin of OakHills defeated Nick 7-5 in a match that displayed Ernst's true spirit. He was taken down first period and escaped late to trail 2-1 going into the 2nd. After a quick reversal to go up 3-2 Nick dominated nearly turning Boudin on a couple of different occasions. As Nick was attempting a turn his hips fell to the mat and he was headlock, but got back into the match with a reversal late in the period, to trail 7-5. The entire 3rd period saw Nick on top attempting to turn Boudin. The loss was a tough one, Ernst ends the year at 32-14.

January 23, 2008
Sidney 21 Troy 46
The Wrestling Team dropped two duals at Troy's new gym. In the first a good Troy Team defeated Sidney 46-21. The Jackets fell behind early as the match began at 125 lbs. Our middle weights the strength of the team got us back into it but the forfeits, 3 in all, were too much to make up as the Jackets lost the last 5 bouts. With Kenton Ridge, Sidney was right in the thick of it but blew a couple of matches early in the dual that made the real difference. We matched up well with Kenton Ridge but didn't always take full advantage of our opportunties. The Wrestling Team dropped to 3-10 on the year. Junior Dustin Opsomer was named "Quiznos Wrestler of the Week" with two first period pins raising his record to 20-12 on the year. Gavin Spangler was the only other double winner for the Jackets.
